Don’t Lose Ground!

Deeply Rooted Series Part 9

Have you ever made real progress in your walk with God… only to slowly drift back into old habits?

Not all at once.
Not dramatically.
Just little by little.

That’s the concern Paul has for the believers in letter to the Galatians. They had come to know God, experienced freedom, and stepped into truth… but now they were in danger of losing ground.

And his question hits hard: Why go back to what once had you bound?

Scripture Focus: Galatians 4:8–20

Deeply Rooted Believers Don’t Revert to Old Patterns (Galatians 4:8–11)

Paul reminds them of their past. Before knowing God, they were enslaved to things that were not truly gods. But now they know God and more importantly, they are known by Him.

So why go back?

The issue was not just behavior. It was direction. They were turning back to systems and practices that had no power to save them.

And if we’re honest, we can do the same thing.

We return to old mindsets.
We fall back into performance.
We pick up habits we were already freed from.

Deeply rooted believers recognize that going backward is not harmless. It slowly pulls us back into what Christ already delivered us from.

Deeply Rooted Believers Value Proven Relationships (Galatians 4:12–16)

Paul shifts from correction to connection. He reminds them of their relationship with him. When he first came to them, it was not under ideal circumstances, yet they received him with love and honor.

There was trust.
There was unity.
There was spiritual fruit.

But now something has changed.

Paul asks a painful question. Has telling you the truth made me your enemy?

This reminds us that deeply rooted believers do not abandon relationships that have been proven in truth. We do not reject voices that have poured into us simply because correction becomes uncomfortable.

Truth spoken in love is not opposition. It is care.

Deeply Rooted Believers Are Not Swayed by False Teachers (Galatians 4:17–18)

Paul exposes the motive of false teachers. They were eager to gain influence, but not for the good of the people. Their goal was to separate the believers from truth so they could gain control.

Not everyone pursuing you is for you.

Some voices sound passionate but are not rooted in truth.
Some influence looks good but leads in the wrong direction.

Deeply rooted believers are discerning. They measure what they hear against the truth of God’s Word and are not easily pulled away by persuasive voices.

Deeply Rooted Believers March Toward Maturity (Galatians 4:19–20)

Paul closes with the heart of a pastor. He describes himself as being in labor again until Christ is formed in them.

That is the goal.

Not behavior modification.
Not surface-level change.
Not just looking the part.

But Christ being formed in us.

Spiritual maturity is not about going through motions. It is about becoming more like Jesus Christ in how we think, live, and love.

This process takes time. It takes correction. It takes surrender.

But it leads to real transformation.

The Goal is For Christ to be Formed in You

Not just around you.
Not just something you hear.
But something that shapes your life from the inside out.

Deeply rooted believers don’t go backward.
They hold onto truth.
They stay grounded in godly relationships.
They remain discerning.
And they keep moving toward maturity.

So ask yourself honestly…

Are you standing firm…
or slowly losing ground?
