You Mean to Say That It’s All Good?
Seeing Romans 8:28 Through God’s Lens
Romans 8:28 is one of the most familiar verses in Scripture:
“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”
But what does that mean when life does not feel good?
During our Make It Make Sense series, Elder Wes challenged us to look more carefully at this promise. Romans 8:28 does not ignore suffering. In fact, the surrounding verses speak honestly about pain, weakness, waiting, and groaning. Paul writes that the sufferings of the present time cannot compare with the glory that God will reveal.
That context matters.
God Is Still Working
Sometimes we read Romans 8:28 as though God promises that every circumstance will be pleasant or easy.
Scripture gives us a deeper picture.
God can work through every circumstance, including the ones we would never have chosen ourselves. The difficulty may not feel good, but God is able to use it for His purposes.
Romans 8:29 gives us another important piece of the picture: God is conforming His people to the image of His Son.
Our definition of “good” is often comfort, success, relief, or getting the outcome we hoped for.
God’s work goes deeper. He is shaping us.
God Meets Us in Our Weakness
There are seasons when we do not even know what to pray.
Romans 8 says the Holy Spirit helps us in those moments and intercedes for us according to the will of God.
That means confusion does not put us outside of God’s care.
Weakness does not mean God has stopped working.
The Spirit is present even when we cannot find the words.
Ask Better Questions
One of the practical challenges from the message was to change the questions we ask during difficult seasons.
Instead of remaining only at:
“Why is this happening?”
We can begin asking:
What are You trying to teach me about You?
What are You trying to teach me about Your Word?
What are You trying to teach me about myself?
What would You have me to do?
Those questions move us toward trust and obedience.
Trust When You Cannot See
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding.
There will be parts of life we cannot explain.
There will be situations we would never label good.
But Romans 8:28 gives us confidence that God has not abandoned His purpose in the middle of them.
No circumstance is meaningless in His hands. The difficult, confusing, and painful pieces of our lives can become part of what God uses to accomplish His purposes and shape us.
Making Sense of the Senseless
The message ended where our entire series keeps bringing us:
Life doesn’t always make sense. But God’s Word does. Therefore, life starts to make sense when you see it through His lens.
When we cannot understand what God is doing, we can still trust who He is.
And sometimes that is where making sense of life begins.
