Holding Steady in a Shifting World

Life has a way of rocking the boat. One minute, everything is calm, and the next, you’re stuck in a storm that came out of nowhere. Whether it’s a sudden crisis or just the everyday challenges, we’ve all been there. But here's the good news: storms may surprise us, but they never surprise God.

In our recent message, we were reminded that no matter how wild the waters get, we don’t have to be lost at sea. God has already given us what we need to stay anchored in Him. He’s steady, even when we’re tossed by waves. When we anchor ourselves in Him, we can stay steady too.

Scriptures Focus: Colossians 3:1-4

Let’s walk through four truths from Colossians 3:1–4 that show us how to stay spiritually anchored—no matter how wild the waters may get.

Seek the Things Above

“So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” - Colossians 3:1 (CSB)

This is an invitation to focus on the eternal, not the temporary. Seeking isn’t passive—it's active! It’s about making a choice to look at God instead of the chaos around us. When we fill our minds and hearts with worship, truth, and grace, we discover strength we didn’t know we had.

Our old lives are dead when we accept Christ, and God raised us into something new. Let’s stop scavenging for purpose in things of this world and start seeking the eternal treasures that anchor our souls.

Set Your Mind on Things Above

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." - Colossians 3:2

It’s one thing to seek. It’s another to set. Imagine locking your thoughts in place like a sail catching the wind— you're securing them. Where your thoughts go, your life follows.

Our feelings don’t have to steer our lives. Our past doesn’t get to dictate our future. If we don’t actively shape our thought life, the world will gladly do it for us. When we choose to reset our minds, we take back control over peace, direction, and purpose.

Remember: Your Life Is Not Your Own

"For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." - Colossians 3:3

This is a big truth: when we chose Jesus, we laid down our own agenda. Our lives are no longer our own; they are safely tucked away in Christ. That’s a beautiful place to be—hiddencovered, and kept. Surrendering isn’t a weakness; it’s what gives us strength.

And yet, it’s easy to forget. When life gets hard, we start comparing, questioning, and trying to take control. We don’t need to chase the world’s version of success. God’s already sealed us with something better.

Trust That Earth Is Not Your Home

"When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." - Colossians 3:4

This world? It’s temporary. Eternity is where our hope lies. That’s the promise we live for. Don’t invest in things that won’t last—comfort, money, success. Our real investment is in Christ and His Kingdom.

When we live with eternity in mind, we stop sweating the small stuff and focus on what truly matters: people and winning their souls for God's Kingdom.

We All Need to Anchor Our Boats...

God never promised smooth sailing. But He did promise Himself.

  • He’s the anchor that keeps us from drifting.

  • He’s the calm in the middle of chaos.

  • He’s the reason we can still stand when everything else shakes.

Whether you’re new to faith or trying to get back on track, remember: You can’t anchor yourself, but you can choose where your anchor drops.

Drop it in Jesus—because He’s steady when we’re not.

He’s strong when we’re weak.

He’s faithful when we drift.

Drop your anchor in Jesus.

When you’re anchored in Christ, the waves may move you, but they’ll never break you.
