That’s My Psalm: I’m the Only Me
Psalm 139:1-16 | That’s My Psalm (Part 12)
Have you ever had one of those moments when you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and immediately started thinking about what you’d change? Maybe it’s your height, your weight, your hair, or even your personality. We live in a world that constantly tells us we need to be “more like them” — more polished, more successful, more put together. But Psalm 139 stops us in our tracks and reminds us of a life-altering truth: God didn’t make a mistake when He made you.
Scripture Focus: Psalm 139:1-16
In this Psalm, David writes not from a place of pride, but of awe. Awe that the God of the universe knows us intimately, never leaves us, and handcrafted us uniquely. Let’s walk through what this means for us today.
God Knows Me Best — He’s Omniscient (Psalm 139:1–6)
“Lord, you have searched me and known me… Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord.” - Psalm 139:1; 4
To be known by God is to be fully understood and fully accepted. He knows the things we say out loud and the things we keep buried deep inside. He knows our thoughts before we think them, our words before we speak them, and our actions before we take them.
That might sound intimidating at first — after all, most of us are afraid of being “too known.” But for the believer, it’s not condemnation — it’s comfort. Because the One who knows us best is also the One who loves us most.
God Never Leaves Me — He’s Omnipresent (Psalm 139:7–12)
“Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” - Psalm 139:7
David realizes he cannot outrun God — and neither can we. There is no place too dark, too far, or too broken for His presence to reach us. Not even our sin can scare Him away.
Some of us live like if we run fast enough, or hide long enough, maybe God will lose track of us. But the truth is, His hand still leads us. His presence still holds us. Even in the places we thought were too hidden, His light shines.
God Created Me Uniquely — I’m the Only Me (Psalm 139:13–16)
“For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” - Psalm 139:13
David shifts from God’s knowledge and presence to God’s design. And notice the word he uses: knit. God didn’t slap you together on an assembly line — He knit you, piece by piece, strand by strand. That means you’re not a copy; you’re a masterpiece.
Even identical twins have different fingerprints. God’s design of you is so detailed, so intentional, that no one else on earth can carry what He gave you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made — remarkable and one-of-a-kind.
So instead of asking, “God, why didn’t you make me like them?” Psalm 139 invites us to worship and say, “God, I praise You because You made me like me.”
Put This Psalm on Repeat
The goal of Psalm 139 is not to boost our self-esteem, but to lift our eyes in awe of our Creator. When you make peace with how God made you, you are actually honoring Him. You’re declaring: “I trust the Artist who designed me.”
You may never be 6’3” like you thought you wanted, but you will always be exactly who God created you to be — and that is more than enough.
Take time every morning this week to pray Psalm 139:14 out loud:
“I will praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Let those words move you from insecurity to awe — from comparison to contentment.
Because family, here’s the truth: there’s only one you. And God calls you good.
