Deeply Rooted: Unity in the True Gospel
If anyone thinks the Bible is boring, they may not be reading it right.
Paul was bold. Strategic. Passionate. And sometimes his letters read like the holy version of a “per my last email” response. Except this wasn’t office drama. This was about the purity of the Gospel.
To understand Galatians 2, we have to remember two things. First, this is a letter. We’re reading someone else’s mail. Paul wrote to multiple churches in Galatia because confusion was spreading. Second, this confusion wasn’t small. It centered on whether Gentiles, non-Jewish believers, needed to follow Jewish law to be saved.
At stake was one critical question: Is salvation based on what Jesus did, or what we do?
Focus Scripture: Galatians 2:1–10
Deeply Rooted Believers Uphold Unity (Galatians 2:1–5)
Paul goes to Jerusalem and privately meets with leaders to confirm that the Gospel he preached to Gentiles was still the same Gospel being upheld by the apostles. Some were insisting that Gentiles must be circumcised to be saved. Paul did not yield for a moment.
Why? Because adding anything to the Gospel enslaves people.
Paul understood the difference between salvation and sanctification. Salvation is by faith in Jesus alone. Sanctification is how we grow in Christ after salvation through the Holy Spirit.
When we confuse the two, we divide the church.
The Judaizers were tying salvation to outward requirements. And before we judge them too quickly, we need to ask ourselves: are we doing the same thing today? Are we attaching cultural preferences, traditions, or personal convictions to what it means to truly be saved?
Deeply rooted believers protect unity by keeping salvation centered on Christ alone.
Deeply Rooted Believers Know Titles Don’t Trump Truth (Galatians 2:6–8)
Paul makes it clear that the so-called “important” leaders added nothing to the Gospel he had already received by revelation from God. Their titles did not override truth. Their status did not redefine doctrine.
And this is crucial for us today.
We live in a time where anyone can claim a title. Pastor. Apostle. Influencer. Teacher. But titles mean nothing if truth is twisted.
Faith in Jesus alone saves. Period.
Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith. Not by works. Not by performance. Not by spiritual status.
Deeply rooted believers measure every message against Scripture, not personality.
Deeply Rooted Believers Believe Salvation Is in Christ Alone (Galatians 2:9–10)
James, Cephas, and John, pillars of the early church, affirmed Paul’s calling. They extended the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that the same Gospel applied to both Jews and Gentiles.
This was radical.
Salvation was not based on ethnicity. Not based on heritage. Not based on observance of the law. It was based on faith in Jesus Christ.
The only instruction added was to remember the poor. Not as a requirement for salvation, but as a reflection of a transformed life.
Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He freed us from the bondage of sin. He rescued us from eternal separation from God. And through Him, we are welcomed into God’s covenant family.
Following rules does not earn salvation. But receiving grace should shape how we live.
Deeply rooted believers live unified, humble, and bold because they know: Jesus is more than enough.
